Article from the Metro Community News - August 2012

LANCASTER- The Lancaster Regional Players (LRP) recently honored its second recipient of the Helen J. Kryszak Memorial Scholarship at the Richard E. Pascucci Memorial Band Shell in the Village of Lancaster.  The presentation was made Wednesday, July 25 during a concert of the Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra as part of the summer concert series presented at the band shell. This year's scholarship recipient was Lancaster High School graduating senior Mark Scherer.

"Mark's extensive backstage experience is particularly impressive, having worked on crews for productions at Lancaster High School, the Lancaster Youth Bureau, and most notably, the Nickel City Opera in Tonawanda," said Eileen Stevic, representative of Lancaster Regional Players, who presented the award.  "Mark has received glowing reviews from those he has worked with, who have said he is dedicated, conscientious, and extremely knowledgeable about all aspects of the backstage workings of the theater."

The $500 scholarship was started last year as a way to honor a longtime member of Lancaster Regional Players, Helen Kryszak, who worked backstage for LRP productions for more than 38 years.

"Despite the dozens of directors who have helmed our shows and the hundreds of actors who have performed with us between 1972 and 2010, the one constant was Helen, who volunteered countless hours of work behind the scenes to ensure that our shows ran smoothly so that the performers looked good onstage," said Stevic. "While many students perform in productions at school and in the community every year, this scholarship chooses to honor those who dedicate themselves to the backstage workings of the theater, those students who work behind the scenes and whose efforts very often go unacknowledged."

"I am honored to receive this scholarship," Scherer said.  "I have been fortunate to have all these opportunities to learn not only the technical aspects of theater, but how to manage tasks and complete them in a timely fashion, which is critical in the theater world. My experiences have shown me what is to be expected of me in college, so that I can bring myself up to the professional level. I have had the chance to see what this career will be like for me after college."

Scherer will be attending SUNY Purchase this fall to pursue a degree in lighting design.  He will study under instructors with extensive lighting experience, including the design and execution of the lightshows for the Super Bowl. His goal is to be a lighting designer for companies and acts that tour throughout the country.  In addition, he is an accomplished musician, having performed for many years in bands at school and the Carnival Kids Steel Orchestra. He performed a special solo with the steel orchestra at the concert before receiving his award.

"This is amazing," Stevic said.  "I get to present our scholarship and listen to an awesome concert at the same time.  Mark is incredibly talented and we wish him the best of luck with his scholastic and career endeavors."
